Report: $124,109 Bet Late On Firenze Fire Ahead Of Dwyer

The Thoroughbred Daily News reports the last-minute drop in odds on Grade 3 Dwyer winner Firenze Fire last weekend was the result of $124,109 being wagered on the colt to win within seconds of the close of betting.

Firenze Fire appeared to be at 5-1 leaving the gate and 5-2 after the race began. The TDN reports the delay occurred because it takes the computer systems several seconds to update odds internally and relay new odds to the NYRA feed.

The TDN cited unnamed sources when it detailed several wagers, one as much as $24,055, being placed on the horse in the last seconds before wagering closed on the race. Some of the patterns of wagers placed could indicate some of the bets were made by a computer program picking up on an overlay.
