Reigning Champion 3-Year-Old West Coast Breezes Half-Mile At Del Mar

West Coast, last seen racing in March in Dubai, is back at work in Southern California. The 4-year-old son of Flatter breezed a half-mile Tuesday at Del Mar in :48 for trainer Bob Baffert.

“When he came back from Dubai, he looked like a tired horse,” Baffert told the Daily Racing Form. “He hadn’t had a break. We freshened him up, gave him 60 days. Now he looks bigger and stronger than before.”

Last year’s Eclipse Award winner in the 3-year-old male division has had two starts this year, a pair of second-place finishes in the Pegasus World Cup in January and Dubai World Cup in March.

Baffert hasn’t announced where or when West Coast might race next, although the Form’s Jay Privman said the way he breezed Tuesday, he wouldn’t be surprised to see the horse back in action soon. West Coast was third in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar.
