Refried Dreams Tops CTHS British Columbia Horses Of Racing Age Sale

A total of 27 Thoroughbreds were purchased for a collective $251,400 (US$188,433) at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (British Columbia) Horses of Racing Age Sale at Hastings Racecourse on Saturday, and in the words of president Grant Watson, the feedback was all positive.

“We were thrilled with the job everyone did, from start to finish,” Watson said in the aftermath of the proceedings. “Our members really stepped up and with the three industry organizations working together, it was a big success.”

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS-BC), Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of B.C. ((HBPA of BC), and Thoroughbred Breeders & Owners Association (BCTOBA), joined together to form the Hole in the Wall Gang consignment, and handled 21 of the 27 horses sold.

All 2-year-olds, the Hole in the Wall Gang-consigned horses were initially purchased with funds provided by the B.C. Horse Racing Industry Management Committee. All funds from the auction will be returned to the committee for industry enhancement programs.

“We are all aware of the horse shortage and the need to fill races,” Watson said.  “As a result of the sale, we will have horses competing that may not have been running at Hastings this year.”

Four of the sales on Saturday were at the $20,000-plus level: Refried Dreams (by Bakken) sold to Terry Jordan for $24,000; Machine (by Colonel John) went to Ole Nielsen for $23,000; Desert Hills (by Shakin It Up) brought $21,000 from Copper Water Thoroughbred Co., and Stay All Night (by Stay Thirsty) sold to Gary Johnson, Pumpkin Stable, and Sharlea Stable for $20,000.

Of the 31 horses listed in the catalog there were three withdrawn and one RNA.

“Part of our CTHS mandate provincially and nationally is to give people an opportunity to sell and to buy horses,” Watson said. “You won’t hear one negative from me the way things ran Saturday.”

He also made a point of acknowledging Darren Macdonald, Regional Director, BC Racing and his staff at Hastings Racecourse for their work behind the scenes at the Horses of Racing Age Sale.

The 2019 Thoroughbred season at Hastings opens Saturday, May 5 and runs through the Oct. 26-27 weekend.
