Ramon Vazquez Scores 12 Victories To Earn Jockey Of The Week Title

Ramon Vazquez led all North American Jockeys by total wins last week and was voted Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for June 11-18, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element’s Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.

After a good weekend of racing and a tough ballot that included multiple graded stakes performances and earnings, Vazquez emerged as the panel’s top choice for Jockey of the Week, due in large part to his remarkable 12 wins, more than any other jockey last week.

Vazquez chipped away at his total steadily all week at Prairie Meadows, picking up several wins on each card. He won by a combined 27 lengths and he was only on the post-time favorite in half of his mounts.

In 35 starts, his win rate was 34%. He finished second and third five times each and was in the money in 63% of his starts for the week.

Despite minimal stakes earnings, Vazquez still cracked the top twenty for total earnings, competing against jockeys with multiple listed and graded stakes wins. He was 18th among all North American jockeys by earnings last week, with $173,142.

The native of Puerto Rico is the current leading rider at Prairie Meadows. He won the meet riding title in Altoona in 2017, with 26 more victories than the runner-up. Vazquez has won multiple riding titles at Remington Park and has finished second in the rider standings to Ricardo Santana, Jr. for several years at Oaklawn.

Voters also recognized Jose Ortiz for his ride on Oscar Performance and new record in the Poker Stakes (G3) at Belmont and Florent Geroux for excellent performances at Churchill in the Wise Dan (G2) with Mr. Misunderstood and in the Regret (G3) with Beyond Blame.
