Racing In The City Streets One Step Closer To Reality After Successful Trials

Horses racing down city streets in Europe may soon be a reality after a successful trial in Greenwich, England. According to the Racing Post, the concept is akin to Formula 1 racing taking place in major city centers, and the hope of organizers is that two races will take place in major cities next year, with an eventual move toward single, six-race cards.

Three trial races were held at Greenwich over a temporary surface, installed at the same facility that hosted the Olympic equestrian events in 2012. Jockeys competed at half-speed, but agreed the surface played safely.

According to current plans, racing surfaces would be laid down, cultivated, used and removed in 72 hours to minimize traffic interruptions.

Horses competing in city racing would be screened extensively by veterinarians to ensure their safety.
