R.D. Hubbard Dispersal To Take Place At Ruidoso Auctions

The complete dispersal of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse stock for influential horseman R.D. Hubbard will take place in the coming months at the Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Sale and Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.

The Thoroughbred portion of the dispersal will take place during the Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Sale on Aug. 21-22. Lazy E Ranch will handle the dispersal.

Among the offerings is Attila’s Storm, a perennial leading sire in New Mexico who stands at A&A Ranch. The 18-year-old son of Forest Wildcat is a Grade 3 winner whose progeny earnings total in excess of $13.3 million. Attila’s Storm was New Mexico’s leading sire by earnings each year from 2016 to 2019.

Attila’s Storm also accounts for several of the weanlings, yearlings, and horses in training – all New Mexico-bred – and he is the covering sire on many of the pregnant broodmares set to be on offer. Other sires represented among the younger offerings are Proceed, Marking, and Delhomme. First-year stallion Sporting Chance is also present in the draft of mares in foal.

The Quarter Horse phase will be primarily held during the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale on Sept. 4-6.

Hubbard’s ownership interest in champion and leading sire Hes Relentless will be on offer, along with shares in One Famous Eagle and Valiant Eagle, and frozen semen stores from sires Attila’s Storm, A Revenant, and The Down Side.

The slate of horses in training includes Determined One, a 3-year-old Hes Relentless gelding who finished third in last year’s G1 All American Futurity.

Quarter Horse weanlings and yearlings in the dispersal are by sires including Apollitical Jess, A Revenant, Hes Relentless, One Famous Eagle, and Tres Seis.

Six New Mexico-bred Quarter Horse yearlings will be offered during the New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale in August; two each by A Revenant, Attila’s Storm, and Zulu Dragon.

Hubbard, who died in April at age 84, was the longtime owner of Ruidoso Downs until its sale in 2017, and he was the CEO of Hollywood Park in California during the 1990s. He was a successful owner and breeder in both the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse realms, owning national-level competitors among both breeds.
