Purely A Dream Leads McPeek Exacta In Turfway’s Bourbonette

Living The Dream Racing's Purely A Dream captured Saturday's G3 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park by about two lengths, earning her first 50 points and a chance to enter the Kentucky Oaks. Off a four-month layoff, the sophomore daughter of Pure Prize covered a mile on the polytrack in 1:37.40 under Robby Albarado, earning her first black-type victory for trainer Ken McPeek.

Purely A Dream had to contend with leaving the starting gate very wide, in the 10-hole of the 12-filly field. She broke sharply and Albarado placed her well, traveling along easily with the second flight of horses beside Gilded Lily in about fifth approaching the far turn. As the field began to string out, Purely A Dream was able to work her way to just three-wide down the backstretch, steadily moving up under no urging from her rider into the third position. Delphinia and I'mluckysgirl had been dueling for the lead throughout moderate early fractions, and just as Gilded Lily began to make her move nearing the three-sixteenths pole, Albarado started pressing on Purely A Dream.

The filly's response was explosive, taking over the lead in a matter of strides on the far turn, and Albarado steered her into the stretch with a two-length advantage. Purely A Dream continued to pour it on until the eighth pole, when she appeared to be waiting on horses a bit. Awesome Boss and Darkwingsoverdubai were closing quickly, but never really threatened Purely A Dream's lead as she crossed the wire about two lengths in front. Her stablemate Awesome Boss finished second, just in front of Darkwingsoverdubai, and Gilded Lily had to settle for fourth.

Bred in Kentucky by James Bredin, Purely A Dream was purchased at the Keeneland September Yearling sale for $60,000. She ran well at Keeneland in her first two starts, winning on the turf to break her maiden, but in her third race at Churchill she tired badly when trying the dirt. Overall, Purely A Dream now boasts two wins from four starts, with earnings of just over $100,000.
