Prince Of Caviar, Son Of Australian Star Black Caviar, Retired From Racing

Prince of Caviar, the second foal out of three-time Australian Horse of the Year Black Caviar, has been retired from racing with his future at stud pending, the Australian site Just Horse Racing reports.

The 4-year-old son of Sebring won one of five starts during his on-track career, and finished second on three occasions, earning $36,920 Australian dollars (US$25,554). He broke his maiden at age three, going 1,300 meters (about 6 1/2 furlongs), but he was plagued by throat issues that sidelined him for over a year.

He underwent throat surgery in the time between starts, and came back to the races in November 2019, running twice before retiring. Following his final start on Nov. 23, a dull eighth in a field of ten, an endoscopy was performed and a throat issue was again revealed, per the steward’s notes.

Prince of Caviar was trained by Michael, Wayne, and John Hawkes for a large partnership of owners including breeder Neil Werrett – a similar group to what campaigned Black Caviar. His regular rider was Luke Nolen, who was also the primary pilot for Black Caviar.

Though still extremely early in her broodmare career, Black Caviar still seeks the first black type earner under her produce record. Her first foal, the Exceed and Excel filly Oscietra, won two of five starts and was retired in May 2018. Black Caviar has also had fillies by Snitzel and More Than Ready.

Black Caviar grabbed global attention during her own racing career, going undefeated in 25 starts in Australia and during the prestigious Royal Ascot meet in England. She was Australia’s Horse of the Year and champion sprinter in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and she tied for first in the Longines World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings in 2013.

She was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2013, making her only the second horse at the time to receive such an honor.
