PR Special Keeneland September: Book 2 Champions

Following the strongest Keeneland September Yearling Sale opening in more than a decade, Book 2 of the world’s most important yearling auction begins Saturday in Lexington, Ky., at 10 a.m. ET. The Paulick Report is pleased to offer the third of four print newsletters, the PR Special, available here and on the Keeneland sale grounds.

In this edition, bloodstock editor Joe Nevills continues his “In the Stand” series on auctioneers. Today’s installment profiles Ryan Mahan, the current director of auctioneers who ascended to the stand after then-Keeneland president James E. Bassett III heard him doing an impression of the late John Finney.

In a year of outstanding first-year sires, Frank Mitchell takes a look at WinStar Farm‘s Carpe Diem, whose early offerings have given breeders a solid return on stud fee investments. Good Magic, the subject of Chelsea Hackbarth’s Honor Roll, is one of four Eclipse Award winners of 2017 to have gone through the Keeneland ring as Book 2 offerings. That phenomenon did not go unnoticed by Joe Nevills, who points out that Book 2 has been the source of numerous champions and G1 winners in recent years.

Rood and Riddle veterinarian Dr. Lilly Haywood explains how horses’ blood types vary from those of humans in Ask Your Veterinarian, and Frank Mitchell wraps up this issue with a dive into the catalogue and some of the sale’s top hips in the popular Ten to Watch feature.
