Pletcher Sending Horses Back North After Waiting Out COVID-19 In Florida

The Daily Racing Form reported Thursday that trainer Todd Pletcher is sending strings of horses north to Churchill Downs and Belmont Park next week. Pletcher had pulled many of his horses from Belmont and sent them to Florida in late March as shutdowns and fears surrounding the coronavirus pandemic ramped up.

Pletcher told the Form that the string he will send to Belmont is largely 2-year-olds and horses returning from layoff, and is a similar group to what he would normally send to Saratoga around this time of year in preparation for summer racing. The Oklahoma Training Track at Saratoga has not been opened as scheduled in mid-April.

The trainer said he was holding off on making first start plans for his horses until he hears more from the New York Racing Association on potential dates for reopening. NYRA has submitted plans to Gov. Andrew Cuomo to run races with no spectators and maintain certain biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
