Pavel Retired To Ocean Breeze Ranch In California, Square Eddie Pensioned

Reddam Racing’s Grade 1-winner Pavel has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Ocean Breeze Ranch in Bonsall, Calif., for the remainder of the 2020 breeding season.

Bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones and Winstar Farm, Pavel won the Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs.

Pavel won first time out as a 3-year-old, going 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.2 at Santa Anita Park. After winning the G3 Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx, he went on to run third in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, beaten 1 3/4 lengths.

At four, Pavel ran fourth to Thunder Snow in the $10-million Dubai World Cup before winning the G1 Stephen Foster. He went on to run second in the G1 Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar later that year.

At five, he ran fourth once again to Thunder Snow in the Dubai World Cup, beaten three lengths. He retires with $2,090,351 in earnings.

Reddam Racing manager Dennis O’Neill purchased Pavel at the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

“He was a gorgeous yearling that we purchased to pinhook as a 2-year-old,” said Reddam Racing manager Dennis O’Neill, who purchased Pavel as a yearling. “He was good-sized, very athletic and very correct, he should be a great addition to California breeding. The week before the OBS sale, I told Zillah and Paul [Reddam] that this was a really special horse.”

The Reddams decided to scratch the colt from the 2-year-old sale and race him.

“He was a hard-knocking horse who ran his heart out in each of his races,” Paul Reddam said. “He took us to some amazing places and will always be one of my favorite horses”.

Pavel is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Caracortado by Creative Cause.

In addition to Pavel, Square Eddie’s son Mrazek will also stand at Ocean Breeze. Mrazek was second in the G3 Lazaro Barrera Stakes beaten a neck. He retired with $312,000 in earnings.

It was also announced that Square Eddie has been pensioned from stud duty.

“Square Eddie will always hold a special place in my heart,” Zillah Reddam said. “He will live a long and pampered life at Ocean Breeze Ranch. We are so proud of him and so thankful we were able to own him.”

Square Eddie retires from stud duty with 215 foals, 17 stakes winners and current total earning of over $15 million.

Pavel will stand the remainder of 2020 and 2021 for a stud fee of $5,000. For each additional mare, the stud fee will be reduced to $3,000.

Mrazek will stand for $2,500.
