Pattershall Suspended 60 Days By Delaware Park Stewards For Possession Of Needles, Syringes, Medication

Trainer Mary Pattershall has been suspended 60 days and fined $1,500 by stewards at Delaware Park for possession of hypodermic needles, syringes and injectable labeled medication on racetrack grounds.

Pattershall, who is stabled at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania, shipped to Delaware Park on Aug. 12, when Five C’s Stable’s Diadema finished sixth in a starter allowance. A second Pattershall entrant Aug. 12, Mario Villanueva’s Wendy Wend, was scratched by the stewards from the eighth race – an allowance/optional claiming event.

Pattershall claimed Wendy Wend for $7,500 from trainer Mario Serey Jr. at Parx on May 13 while the 4-year-old Run Away and Hide colt was winning for the third time in 25 career starts. He went up the ladder after that, winning three consecutive races for Pattershall: a $12,500 claiming race May 20; a $16,000 claimer June 19; and an allowance race with a $48,000 purse July 22. After being scratched by Delaware Park stewards Aug. 12, Wendy Wend was transferred to trainer Howard Brown Jr. and finished fifth in a Monmouth Park $40,180 allowance/optional claiming race Aug. 26.

According to a ruling dated Aug. 28, Pattershall “admitted to the possession of the confiscated illegal hypodermic needles, hypodermic syringes and injectable medication on the grounds of Delaware Park.”

The suspension runs from Sept. 1 through Oct. 30. This is Pattershall’s second medication violation, the first coming at Parx June 12, 2017, when Diadema tested positive for triamcinolone acetonide. Equibase statistics show that Pattershall has been training since 2000, with 32 career wins from 340 starts.

Correction: This is Pattershall’s second medication violation, not her first as stated in the original version of this article.
