Painting Corners Heads Wide Open Field Of 10 In Saturday’s Ken Maddy

In what appears to be one of the best betting races on Saturday’s 11-race program, Painting Corners, Rubilinda, I’m Betty G and Storm the Hill head a wide-open field of 10 fillies and mares three and up going 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in the G3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes.

Trained by Peter Miller, Painting Corners was never seriously threatened by Richard Mandella’s Rubilinda in a classified allowance down the hillside here on Oct. 6, as Painting Corners won by 2 ¼ lengths, while Rubilinda, the 8-5 favorite, tired late to finish fifth, beaten four lengths.

A three-time minor stakes winner making her first start west of the Mississippi, I’m Betty G ships west from Kentucky for trainer Mike Maker as she seeks her first graded stakes win, while Phil D’Amato’s graded stakes winning Storm the Hill returns to Santa Anita and a layout she adores.

PAINTING CORNERS

Owner: Altamira Racing Stable and Slam Dunk Racing Trainer: Peter Miller

A sharp horse who’s been throwing strikes of late, this 4-year-old Florida-bred filly by Pleasant Strike comes off a pair of turf sprint wins and will be trying stakes company for the first time. Off at 9-2 in her classified win versus Rubilinda Oct. 6, she was completely dominant and will hope to maintain her edge as she seeks her four win from seven hillside starts. With Drayden Van Dyke away to ride the Breeders’ Cup, Evin Roman, who guided her to a five furlong turf win seven starts back in November, 2017, takes over.

RUBILINDA

Owner: Don Alberto Stable Trainer: Richard Mandella

Originally conditioned by Chad Brown, this classy 4-year-old daughter of Frankel had been idle since May 10 at Belmont Park prior to being favored here on Oct. 6. A two-time minor stakes winner on turf at Belmont, she shipped west to Del Mar and was a respectable sixth in the Grade I Matriarch Stakes three races back on Nov. 26, 2017. Bred in Kentucky by her owner, she’s trained well since her last startand with Gary Stevens engaged for the first time, she could improve significantly in her second start for Mandella.

I’M BETTY G

Owner: Three Diamonds Farm Trainer: Mike Maker

The lone supplement in the Maddy field, this 4-year-old Maryland-bred filly by Into Mischief was most recently fifth as the 5-2 favorite in the Grade III, five furlong turf Ladies Turf Stakes at Kentucky Downs Sept. 8. With $322,905 in the bank, a graded stakes win would increase her residual value considerably and would be the crowning achievement of what has already been her best year to date, as she has three wins and a third from six starts in 2018. With veteran turf specialist Brice Blanc engaged, look for him to have her well positioned early in her Santa Anita debut.

STORM THE HILL

Owner: Alastar Thoroughbred Company LLC and Michael Valdes Trainer: Phil D’Amato

A winner of the Grade III Wilshire Stakes at a mile on turf here three starts back on June 24, she returns to Santa Anita following a fourth place finish in the Grade III Ladies Turf on Sept. 8 at Kentucky Downs, the same race in which I’m Betty G finished fifth as the favorite. Although Storm the Hill is two for three down the hillside turf, this will be her first start over the unique layout since she took a minor stakes here on Sept. 30, 2017—some 10 races back. Rafael Bejarano, who guided her to the Wilshire win, is back aboard on Saturday.
