Oxbow Gelding Tops CTHS Alberta Yearling Sale

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Alberta Division) Yearling Sale saw across-the-board declines during its 2019 renewal, and it was topped by an Oxbow gelding who changed hands for $48,000 (Canadian).

The single-day auction took place Sept. 11 at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta, with 69 yearlings bringing a combined $463,300. That marked a 37 percent decrease from the 2018 edition of the Alberta sale, when 76 yearlings brought $734,000.

Also declining this year were the average sale price of $6,714, falling 30 percent, and the median of $2,700, down 34 percent.

A gelding by Calumet Farm resident Oxbow, offered as Hip 66, topped the sale, going to 114002 Alberta Ltd. for $48,000.

The dark bay or brown gelding is out of the stakes-placed Street Cry mare Samara Street, who is also the dam of stakes-placed Choteau. The Alberta-bred’s extended page includes Grade 3 winners Lightmyfirebaby and Bold Southerner.

Highfield Investment Group consigned the sale-topper.
