Outrider Recovering From Being Trampled During San Luis Rey Fire

Trainer and outrider Les Baker is recovering from numerous injuries sustained while he tried to save horses at San Luis Rey Downs from last week’s Lilac Fire. According to NBC 7 San Diego, Baker, 66, suffered nine broken ribs and numerous cuts and bruises when a group of frightened, loose horses came out of the smoke and ran him over.

Baker was at his barn on the San Luis Rey property, trying to fend off flames with a garden hose for a period of time before he realized he had to get out. Baker thinks four or more horses stepped on him when the herd overtook him outside the barn.

The television station reports one of Baker’s two horses did not survive the blaze. The other was rescued by volunteers and has been located.

Baker said he has been touched so far by the outpouring of support and donations from friends and strangers since word of his injuries spread.
