‘One Industry’: Brexit Could Have Major Impact On Racing And Breeding In Europe

Racing officials in Europe are concerned over the ripple effects that Brexit – the British secession from the European Union – could have on the Thoroughbred industry, according to a report by CNN.

“It would have a huge impact on horse racing in this country and in Britain, it is a real worry,” Brian Kavanagh, chief executive of Horse Racing Ireland, told Danielle Rossingh, reporting for CNN.com.

The exit from the European Union could end the ease of movement of both racing and breeding stock among England, Ireland and France, causing travel delays or requiring horses to go into quarantine when they cross international borders. An agreement among those countries, in place since the 1960s, could be in peril, CNN reports.

The decision by British voters to leave the EU has already had an effect, the report says, as the British Pound has weakened against other currencies and led to a decline in Irish stud fees.
