Omaha Beach’s Return To California Delayed, Colt’s Throat ‘Not Healed Enough Yet’ After Surgery

Omaha Beach’s landing at Santa Anita has been delayed.

Originally scheduled to arrive tomorrow, the pre-race favorite for the May 4 Kentucky Derby was declared out of the race on May 1 due to an entrapped epiglottis, necessitating throat surgery that was performed May 3 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.

The son of War Front trained by Richard Mandella is doing well but now won’t return to his home base of Santa Anita for another week or so.

“He’s still at WinStar Farm in Kentucky, but he’s not quite healed up yet,” the Hall of Fame trainer said Saturday morning. “He’ll be on a plane to California but we don’t have a schedule to know when that is.

“It shouldn’t be too long, perhaps a week or so. He is healing from the procedure, but it’s just not healed enough yet to ship him right now.”
