Ocala Jockey Club Releases 2019 Fees

Ocala Jockey Club in Reddick, Fla., has set stallion fees for the 2019 breeding season.

Irish Surf’s stud fee will remain at $5,000 and Thoreau’s stud fee will remain at $1,500. Both are live foal stands and nurses contracts, and both stallions are Breeders’ Cup and Florida Sire Stakes nominated.

Grade 3 winner, G2 placed and Del Mar track record holder Irish Surf’s good looks and royal bloodlines give exciting options to Florida breeders to add depth of pedigree to Florida mares. He is the only son of Giant’s Causeway standing in Florida, and his first two dams were Eclipse Award champion fillies and multiple Grade 1 winners, including G1 wins at two. His first dam is four-time G1 winner and 3-year old Eclipse champion Surfside and his second dam is Eclipse Award champion and multiple G1 winner Flanders. His first foals arrive in 2019.

Thoreau is a well-priced son of sire-of-sires Gone West, relocated to Florida from California. After limited experimental private breedings in California, Thoreau is being made available to the public.

From limited matings, he has produced such runners as 2-year-old stakes winner Fairfaithhills, multiple winner Belle de France, Music Babe (five wins by 9 1/4 lengths), Theorem (two wins by 10 3/4 lengths), and multiple winner Mighty Thor. Thoreau carries the same Gone West/Northern Dancer cross as Speightstown and Grand Slam. Thoreau is out of a daughter of leading sire Deputy Minister and G2 winner Broad Dynamite, from the family of Very Subtle.

The Ocala Jockey Club will host the Ocala Jockey Club International 3-Day Event this upcoming Thursday to Friday, Nov. 15 to 18. As part of the event’s activities, there will be stallion barn tours each day at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m., open to all event attendees with general admission tickets to the event. Event tickets are available at www.OJC3de.com and those interested in the stallion barn tours may sign up on the website or by calling the Ocala Jockey Club at (352) 591-1212. Both stallions are otherwise available to be viewed by appointment. The farm website is www.OcalaJC.com.

Pavla and Erik Nygaard, owners of the Ocala Jockey Club and both stallions, have established themselves as breeders focusing on high-percentage quality matings from relatively modest breedings. Out of just 37 foals of racing age born in the Thor-Bred Stables’ commercial breeding program to date, they have been at the helm of planning the matings of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Battle of Midway, G1 Winner Klimt, G3 Winner Ocean Knight, G2-placed Nero, eight six-figure sales horses and two yearlings selling over $900,000 each. Their boutique approach with a rigorous focus on breeding matches has resulted in it landing in the #43 spot among the U.S. leading breeders for 2017 by earnings, and 15th by earnings per start.
