Oaklawn Stewards Investigating Whether Ineligible Horse Won Race

Stewards at Oaklawn Park are investigating whether an ineligible horse won Saturday’s seventh race at the Hot Springs, Ark., racetrack.

Chris and Dave, owned by Danny Caldwell and trained by Federico Villafranco, won the starter allowance by 2 ¼ lengths under Ricardo Santana Jr., but on Sunday morning stewards received a protest on the race over questions of the Bluegrass Cat gelding’s eligibility.

“It is being investigated,” steward Stan Bowker confirmed by text message, adding that he would know more about the case on Wednesday.

The race conditions state the contest was for “four year olds and upward which have started for a claiming price of $50,000 or less in 2018 and which have not won two races since August 23, 2018.”

Chris and Dave was was claimed by Caldwell and Villafranco for $45,000 from from Lucky Dog Stables, Clayton Wiest and Rick Wiest and trainer Robertino Diodoro out of his last start at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 14 of this year – an allowance/optional claiming race, in which he finished second.

Chris and Dave  had 11 starts in 2018. While two of those starts were allowance/optional claiming races with a claiming price of $16,000, Equibase charts indicate Chris and Dave did not run for a claiming tag in either race. All of Chris and Dave’s other 2018 starts either were allowance races, stakes or optional claiming races with a claiming price above $50,000. Before Saturday, he had just one win since Aug. 23, 2018, that coming at Belmont Park on Oct. 11.

The runner-up in Saturday’s race was Diodoro-trained Secret Passage, owned by Lucky Dog Stables, Fitch Racing Stable and Selman Shaby.

Chris and Dave paid $6.60 to win as the second choice behind favored Secret Passage and the winner’s share of the $50,000 purse was $30,000. A total of $333,559 was wagered on the race in various pools.
