Oaklawn Handicap Winner By My Standards Will Target Breeders’ Cup Classic

Allied Racing Stable LLC’s By My Standards, after securing a stalking position from post 12, overhauled front-running Warrior’s Charge in midstretch to win the 1 1/8-mile Oaklawn Handicap by 1 ¾ lengths under Gabriel Saez on Saturday. By My Standards (3 for 3 this year) was exiting a three-length score in the $400,000 New Orleans Classic (G2) March 21 at Fair Grounds.

“He got him away super sharp last time and I said that’s really going to be the key today, getting him away from there sharp,” trainer Bret Calhoun said following the victory. “I didn’t expect him to be that close, honestly. I thought there were a couple of other faster horses in there and I didn’t expect him to be that close. Once he got that position early on, and looked like he was doing it comfortably, I had a lot of confidence.”

The winning time over a fast track (1:47.80) was the quickest for an Oaklawn Handicap since Medaglia d’Oro (1:47.66) in 2003. By My Standards won for the first time in three starts outside Louisiana. A foot problem sidelined the Goldencents colt for the remainder of 2019 following an 11th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.

Overall, By My Standards has a 5-2-1 mark from nine lifetime starts and earnings of $1,281,910. He also won the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2) last year at Fair Grounds. Calhoun and Allied Racing Stable (Chester Thomas) teamed to win the $200,000 Oaklawn Stakes for 3-year-olds April 11 with Mr. Big News.

Calhoun said next-race plans are pending for By My Standards, but the year-end goal is the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at 1 ¼ miles Nov. 7 at Keeneland.
