NYRA Bets Presents Weekend Play At Saratoga: Saturday’s Late Pick 5

The Paulick Report in conjunction with NYRA Bets is pleased to introduce a new weekly feature, NYRA Bets Presents Weekend Play At Saratoga. Each week, one of our editors will focus on a single wager – whether it's win, place or show, exacta, trifecta or multi-race bet like the NYRA Bets Late Pick 5, which is available exclusively to NYRA Bets customers or on-track customers in New York or at New York simulcasting facilities.

To kick off the series, Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick – whose handicapping experience includes an eight-year stint at Daily Racing Form in the 1980s – will try to solve Saturday's NYRA Bets Late Pick 5 riddle.

Saturday's NYRA Bets Late Pick 5 runs from races 7 through 11 and includes the Grade 1 Diana, where Lady Eli will be bidding for her ninth win from 12 starts. While the Chad Brown-trained filly lost to Dickinson earlier this year in the G1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland, it was a race Lady Eli probably needed as a tightener to begin her 2017 campaign. She is going to be my one single in this sequence.

Race 7: Partly Mocha (No. 9) is an old pro going in good form for Mike Maker and gets Jose Ortiz. Grand Candy (4) was right there at the finish with Partly Mocha in his last start and switches to Javier Castellano.

Race 8: Hard to look past Chad Brown-trained Volatility Index (1), who may be light on experience but is a neck shy of being unbeaten in three starts. I'll also use the other Brown runner, Penjade (2), who came back from a brief respite with a last-gasp allowance win at Belmont in early May. Pricedtoperfection (5), formerly from Brown's stable and now trained by Graham Motion, has faced the best company, and while maybe needing a race, can't be ignored. Of the two Christophe Clement runners, I favor Stella Rose (10), who will benefit from a fast pace and be flying late.

Race 9: Admiral Jimmy (5) made a nice sustained run to be third in the Tremont for Todd Pletcher and keeps Castellano. There figures to be plenty of speed in here. Free Drop Billy (4) made a good impression winning first out at Churchill Downs for Dale Romans and looks better than his 15-1 morning line indicates. A second Pletcher runner, Bal Harbour (2), stands to benefit from a pace battle.

Race 10: Lady Eli (3) is as honest and talented as they come. These are not pushovers, but the daughter of Divine Park is my long NYRA Bets Late Pick 5 single.

Race 11: Mills (1) goes from David Cannizzo to Rudy Rodriguez after being claimed for $40,000 and looks to be in solid form. Like Rodriguez, Robertino Diodoro has a high win percentage first time after a claim, and that makes Chiltern Street (3) dangerous in here. Blarp (9) had bad luck last out at Churchill Downs and is good enough on his best day.

Ticket ($.50 base wager): 4, 9 / 1, 2, 5, 10 / 2, 4, 5 / 3 / 1, 3, 9 (Total $36)
