Noseda: ‘Pretty Confident’ Gronkowski Will Handle Dirt At Churchill Downs

Jeremy Noseda’s exciting colt Gronkowski will head to America next for the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby after a fantastic start to the season. Purchased at last year’s Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale for 300,000 guineas by agent Kerri Radcliffe from Lynn Lodge Stud, the handsome son of Lonhro owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds Limited is unbeaten in four consecutive All-Weather starts, and Noseda is thrilled with his preparation ahead of the race.

“I am delighted with him. He’s a lovely straight forward horse to deal with and everything is very much on schedule with our preparation,” he told Tattersalls. “He leaves for America in two weeks, on Saturday 28 April, and by the time he leaves quarantine and starts training it will be Tuesday morning.  That’s the plan and I think it is the perfect timing for his arrival.

“It’s just getting him happy, fit, and healthy, and then we have to find out if he goes on the dirt or not.  I’m pretty confident he’ll handle it well. They either do or they don’t, no matter how much you train them.”

Named after New England Patriots star and two-time Super Bowl winner Rob Gronkowski, Noseda will be hoping his three-year-old can live up to his impressive namesake on the track.

“I am definitely looking forward to meeting Gronkowski the man. It will be a huge day and will possibly open racing, even at the Kentucky Derby, to a different level of sports fans with the NFL being the most high-profile sport in America.

“The Kentucky Derby is one of the most special days in horse racing. It has an atmosphere and intensity that I have never experienced at any other race anywhere in the world.  It is a special event to be at and we will roll the dice and give it our best shot.”

The ‘breeze’ for the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale will be shown live on Racing UK today, April 16, from 9.30am. The Craven Breeze Up Sale, which takes place after racing on April 17 and 18, is Europe’s Premier Breeze Up Sale, and features 172 two-year-olds.

“I will be heading to the Craven sale. I would like to find the next Gronkowski, hopefully something perhaps even a little better! We’ll keep our fingers crossed,” Noseda added.
