Newmarket or Churchill Downs? A Classic Choice For Ryan Moore

British bookmakers are taking bets on where jockey Ryan Moore will be on the first Saturday in May: at Churchill Downs to ride Mendelssohn in the Kentucky Derby or at Newmarket aboard Saxon Warrior in the English classic, the 2000 Guineas.

So far, the Racing Post reports, bettors are favoring Kentucky for Moore, who rode Mendelssohn to a stunning 18 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s Group 2 UAE Derby at Meydan in Dubai. The Scat Daddy colt, a half brother to multiple champion Beholder and sire Into Mischief, set a new track record for the 1 3/16 miles in 1:55.18 in his first race on dirt. Mendelssohn won last year’s G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar.

“The Kentucky Derby is a race on my bucket list but we’ll have to see what’s best to do closer to the time,” Moore was quoted as saying. Moore is currently odds-on to ride in the Kentucky Derby, according to odds posted by various bookmakers. He’s won the 2000 Guineas twice.

Saxon Warrior, who like Mendelssohn is trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O’Brien, is considered an early favorite for the 2,000 Guineas.
