Newly-Retired Justify Arrives At WinStar Farm

Triple Crown winner Justify took the next step in his life as a retiree on Wednesday, when he arrived at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky.

The 3-year-old son of Scat Daddy’s retirement was announced July 25 after filling in his ankle made the timeline for a fall campaign and a bid in the Breeders’ Cup Classic unfeasible. Justify made his final public appearance at a racetrack on Saturday when he was paraded before the fans at Del Mar.

A small assembly of onlookers met Justify on the tarmac at the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Ky., on Wednesday, filming the colt with their phones as he walked down the ramp from the plane to the trailer. Justify was then greeted with more camera clicks from the media as he took his took his first steps off the trailer and observed his surroundings.

WinStar Farm holds a controlling interest among Justify’s ownership group which also includes China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, and Starlight Racing. Justify will reside at WinStar Farm until a final decision is announced regarding his future stallion plans. Elliott Walden, WinStar’s president and CEO, acknowledged during Justify’s retirement announcement that a possible sale to the Coolmore partnership is in place, but it wouldn’t be finalized until a later date.

In the meantime, Justify will be made available for viewing at the farm through various tours and fan events, starting with a “First Look” event for members of WinStar’s StableMates program on Aug. 10-11.

“I think we’re incredibly privileged to be in his presence,” said David Hanley, general manager of WinStar Farm. “Just to be along for the ride and just see, at every question that was asked of him, he was just one of the great horses, and that’s what the good ones are like. I’m really excited for his stud career, for his future. Hopefully 20 years from now we look back and history will reveal that maybe he becomes a great stallion and an influence on the breed. He’s that kind of horse.”
