New York Islanders To Be Announced As Winning Bidder For Belmont Park Arena

Though the official announcement is not expected until Wednesday morning, the New York Islanders hockey team has been awarded the bid for a new arena project at Belmont Park, as first reported by Newsday. According to NBC News, the winning bid includes an 18,000-seat arena, a hotel, and 435,000 square feet of retail space.

Both the Islanders and major league soccer team the New York City Football Club submitted bids to the Empire State Development Corporation in September, vying for the right to redevelop 36 acres of property at Belmont Park. That property is primarily a parking lot used on Belmont Stakes day; in the off-season, it houses cars for auto dealerships.

The Islanders currently play at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Officials expected the arena project to require 20 months to complete once it has begun.
