New Mexico Racing Commissioner Removed From Post

One of five members of the New Mexico Racing Commission, Freda McSwane was removed from her post this week after refusing a request for her resignation. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the action stemmed from comments McSwane made at a public meeting back in May.

“We basically perpetrated a fraud, in my opinion, on our veterinarians and on our trainers and patrons and everyone else, because we led them to believe that they can trust in what we were doing,” McSwane said, referring to the Commission’s change to a new testing lab for post-race samples.

The Commission is dealing with a number of appeals, as some owners and trainers with positive tests believe they should have been granted a “grace period” after the switch. McSwane, an active owner and breeder in the industry, said she had been concerned about the way testing was done for a long time.
