New Legislation Would Authorize NYRA To Build A State-Of-The-Art Drug Testing Lab

Part of this year’s spending plan for the state of New York includes a new drug testing laboratory for New York racing. According to a report from The Blood-Horse, one of the bills that is part of the spending plan authorizes the New York Racing Association to build a new lab based on the renowned facility at the University of California-Davis.

The new facility would focus on both testing and drug research to engineer tests for new substances more quickly.

The location of the new lab is undetermined. NYRA would shoulder the costs via the New York State Gaming Commission.

Officials pointed to the recent federal indictments surrounding an alleged doping ring, highlighting the need for more agile testing. According to indictment documents, the substances used were reputed not to show up on post-race drug tests.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has yet to sign the bill, but had proposed the idea back in January.
