Rather than dwell on the controversial Kentucky Derby, trainer Mark Casse prefers to look forward to this Saturday’s 144th edition of the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. His trainee War of Will endured a rough trip in the Derby, but Casse told the Baltimore Sun that he will try to put that race out of his mind.
“One thing about me, good or bad, my memory is pretty short,” Casse said. “I tend to look forward and not back. I don’t worry about it much. I just try to do better the next time.”
None of the first four finishers from the Derby-Maximum Security, Country House, Code of Honor, and Tactitus-are expected to enter the Preakness. The next horse across the line, Improbable, will be the likely favorite. War of Will, who finished eighth after being forced out at the five-sixteenths pole, was then elevated to seventh due to the disqualification of Maximum Security. He and jockey Tyler Gaffalione will be pursing a cleaner course in the second jewel of the Triple Crown.
