Moutaineer: Poor Performance Of 4-5 Favorite Under Investigation

Sent off as the 4-5 favorite in Wednesday’s eighth race at Mountaineer, Clark Brewster and Barry Ostrager’s Utana finished fifth in a field of seven after lugging out badly on the turn. According to thoroughbreddailynews.com, the mare’s performance is under investigation by the West Virginia Racing Commission.

There was $26,500 bet on Utana to finish third, in a manner of wagering often called “bridge jumping.” Shortly prior to the start, Utana’s odds showed on the board at 1-9, but drifted up to 4-5 on the final flash of the odds board.

The Equibase chart notes describe Utana’s run as follows: “sluggish from the outset bore out on the turn coming 10 wide in upper stretch showing interest well after the fact.”

“We’re investigating it. I can’t tell you any more than what you’ve seen on the replays at this point. We’re looking into it,” said WVRC executive director Joe Moore.
