Monmouth Park: TVG’s Tom Cassidy Presented With Bill Handleman Memorial Award

The 2017 Bill Handleman Memorial Award went to Tom Cassidy of TVG for outstanding coverage of last year's $1 million betfair.com Haskell Invitational. Inaugurated in 2012, the Handleman Memorial Award honors outstanding media coverage of the Haskell Invitational, Monmouth Park's signature race.

“Tommy is a very deserving winner of the Handleman Award,” said Bob Kulina, president of Darby Development LLC, operators of Monmouth Park. “He got his start right here at Monmouth and we've all enjoyed watching his career flourish and look forward to many years of great accomplishments from this outstanding young man.”

The award honors the late Bill Handleman, who was lead sportswriter for the Asbury Park Press for nearly three decades and made Monmouth Park his home away from home. Mr. Handleman died in June of 2010 at age 62.

The first recipient of the Handleman Award was Tom Luicci of The Star-Ledger, followed by Steve Edelson of the Asbury Park Press in 2013, Dave Johnson of Sirius XM in 2014, Ed McNamara of Newsday in 2015 and Bob Ehalt of ESPN.com last year.

Cassidy earned the Handleman Award for his on-air coverage of the 2016 Haskell Invitational, the 49th running of the race, won by Exaggerator.

A native of Spotswood, New Jersey, Cassidy has been a member of the TVG crew since 2011.
