‘Minor Setback’: Gronkowski Misses Scheduled Breeze, Jim Dandy Not Ruled Out

Belmont Stakes runner-up Gronkowski has been aiming for the G2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on July 28, but a missed breeze this weekend could interfere with those plans, reports drf.com. Owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, the 3-year-old son of Lonhro most recently breezed a half-mile in :49.24 at Belmont Park on June 23.

“Gronkowski had a minor setback out of his work last week that’s just a week-to-week deal,” said trainer Chad Brown. “He missed his work this week, I’m just taking it week to week and seeing when I can get him back on the work tab.”

Brown has not ruled Gronkowski out of consideration for the Jim Dandy. Previously trained by Jeremy Noseda, Gronkowski compiled four wins in Europe, including a listed stakes victory, before a slight fever kept him from making the flight for the Kentucky Derby. Instead, he was moved to Brown’s barn in New York, and posted a visually impressive runner-up performance in the Belmont Stakes. The colt is expected to target the Travers Stakes, should he make the Jim Dandy.
