Minor Ankle Injury Knocks Mr. Monomoy Off Triple Crown Trail

Mr. Monomoy, the half-brother to champion Monomoy Girl and recent winner of the G2 Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds, has been diagnosed with a minor ankle injury, reports the Daily Racing Form. The 3-year-old son of Palace Malice has subsequently been removed from Triple Crown consideration, and is en route to WinStar Farm for his rehabilitation.

“We sent the X-rays to Kentucky and they thought the horse needed 60 days’ rest,” bloodstock agent and racing manager Liz Crow told drf.com. “It’s bad timing, but luckily we caught this before it became anything serious.”

A $202,230 purchase at the Arqana May 2-year-old sale last year, Mr. Monomoy kicked off his sophomore campaign with a third-place finish in the G3 Lecomte Stakes. He has not worked since winning the first division of the Risen Star on Feb. 15, but is expected to re-join trainer Brad Cox after recovering from his injury.
