Midcourt Posts Dominant Victory In San Pasqual

C R K Stable’s Midcourt was dominant in Saturday’s Grade 2 San Pasqual, inheriting the lead early and drawing away late to win by about four lengths as the 2-1 second choice. The gelded 5-year-old son of Midnight Lute, ridden by Victor Espinoza for trainer John Shirreffs, ran nine furlongs over Santa Anita’s fast main track in 1:48.49.

Not particularly sharp out of the starting gate, Midcourt and Espinoza rushed up to grab the lead before the clubhouse turn. Unopposed in the early stages with at least a two-length advantage, Midcourt set fractions of :23.50 and :47.31. Restrainedvengence was closest to the leader in the backstretch and the far turn, but Midcourt had plenty left in the stretch to pull away and win by about four lengths.

Two Thirty Five made a big run late to finish second, while Combatant closed from the rear of the field to be third. King Abner held fourth over Restrainedvengence.

Bred in Kentucky by Dixiana Farms, Midcourt is out of the Grade 1-winning French Deputy mare Mayo On The Side. He brought $450,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale, but was unsuccessful in his first two starts as a 2-year-old. After more than a year away from the races, Midcourt broke his maiden second off the layoff to start a four-race win streak culminating in the G3 Native Diver last November.

Most recently third in the G2 San Antonio, Midcourt’s win in the San Pasqual improved his overall record to five wins from nine starts for earnings of over $340,000.
