Methods Of Euthanasia Diminishing For WI Horse Owners

Putting an animal down is a difficult decision; euthanizing an animal as large as a horse comes with its own set of complications. Horse owners in Wisconsin are facing the loss of one method of euthanasia if they want a renderer to pick up the animal: the use of sodium pentobarbital.

Traces of the drug in dog food triggered a widespread recall. Because of this, pet food manufacturing plants will no longer take horses that have been euthanized with the drug. Horse owners now have two options, according to WTMJ: euthanize the horse and have it cremated or shoot it and have the renderer remove it.

The Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital is working to help horse owners find a reasonable cremation cost.
