Medaglia d’Oro Filly, Into Mischief Colt Bring $1.2 Million To Top Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale

A colt by Into Mischief and a filly by Medaglia d’Oro each brought $1.2 million to pace the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training Wednesday at Gulfstream Park. Following the trend line of recent select sales of 2-year-olds, including the juvenile sales season opener earlier this month at OBS in Ocala, the Gulfstream Sale was characterized by a large number of withdrawals. It achieved its second highest average and median price in history and highest since the sale moved to Gulfstream Park in 2015, Fasig-Tipton officials said.

On the day, there were 61 juveniles reported as sold (including three private sales that went through the ring as reserve not attained, or RNA). Gross revenue was $23,495,000, with an average of $385,164 and median of $295,000. In 2006, the average was a record $403,812. The highest median ever was $300,000 in 2013.

The 2018 figures represented a 6.5 percent decline in gross revenue but 13.5 percent and 9.3 percent gains in the respective average and median, compared to 2017. At last year’s sale, 74 juveniles sold for $25,115,000, an average of $339,392 and median of $270,000.

“It was an extremely strong marketplace at the upper end, said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “There were multiple bidders on the horses that performed well, vetted well, made good videos.”

This year’s RNA rate was 33.0 percent after 30 horses of 91 through the ring did not find a buyer. Last year’s rate was extremely low for a selected sale of 2-year-olds, 14.9 percent (13 of 87 were not sold).

Combined with the 71 juveniles withdrawn, 101 of the 162 cataloged did not sell, representing a clearance rate of 37.7 percent (the percentage of horses in the catalog that sold).

The $1.2 million Medaglia d’Oro filly was purchased by bloodstock agent John Moynihan on behalf of Stonestreet Stables in the early stages of the sale.

Going into the ring as Hip 9, the bay filly was consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, agent, after being purchased for $200,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2017 and working an eighth of a mile in 10 seconds flat on Monday. Out of the Distorted Humor mare, Mi Vida, the filly’s third and fourth dams – Dream Supreme and Spinning Round, respectively – were both Grade 1 winners. Dream Supreme also produced G1 winner and sire Majestic Warrior.

Into Mischief colt was purchased for $1.2 million by Lawrence Best’s OXO Equine

The Into Mischief colt, Hip 77, was purchased by Lawrence Best’s OXO Equine for $1.2 million after being purchased as a yearling for $190,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale. Out of the Lawyer Ron mare Assets of War, the bay colt breezed in 10 flat for his consignor, Eddie Woods, agent. The colt’s second dam, Added Asset, by Lord At War, was a graded stakes winner out of graded stakes winner Added Elegance.

Another seven-figure juvenile came when Hip 31, a colt by the late Scat Daddy and the first foal out of stakes winner Risky Rachel, by Limehouse, sold for $1 million. Consigned by Steven Venosa’s SGV Thoroughbreds, the colt was purchased by trainer Todd Pletcher on behalf of Coolmore’s M.V . Magnier.

Donato Lanni, agent for Susan Chu’s Baoma Corp., spent $900,000 on Hip 54, a filly by Orb consigned by Tom McCrocklin, agent. The filly breezed a quarter mile in 21 flat for McCrocklin, who bought her for $130,000 on behalf of Little Red Feather’s pinhooking partnership at the  Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale last year. Out of the Forestry mare Taboo, the filly’s second dam is G1 stakes winner Dream of Summer, who produced G1 winner and sire Creative Cause and G2 winner Destin.

Fourteen horses sold for $600,000 or more, up from eight in 2017. “[There was] great attendance and distribution of the buying population across the board,” Browning said. “All in all, I thought it was a strong horse sale… it bodes well for our next sale in Timonium in May.”
