McCarthy, Torres Transported To Local Trauma Center After Scary Laurel Park Spill

During Friday’s sixth race at Laurel Park, jockey Trevor McCarthy’s mount “Tuffy’s Way” broke down just before the quarter pole and set off a scary three-horse collision. Unable to avoid her was the pair of Lucky Dilly and jockey Horacio Karamanos; they fell over top of Tuffy’s Way and McCarthy.

Alluring Prospect and Rosario Montanez were just able to avoid the impact by finding room at the rail, but Kimberly B. went head-over-heels when Tuffy’s Way tried to get up; the horses collided and rider Jomar Torres was thrown into the ground.

Karamanos was the first to be up and moving, according to the track announcer, and on TVG Caton Bredar reported that all three riders were conscious after the incident. McCarthy and Torres were removed from the track by stretcher and transported to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. Karamanos was up on his feet after the incident but was taken to Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, Md.

The horses Kimberly B. and Tuffy’s Way were both euthanized after the incident.

Maryland’s leading rider in 2014 and 2016, McCarthy is coming off Laurel’s fall meet championship. Karamanos is a veteran of more than 2,100 career wins and $55 million in purse earnings. Torres has won 232 races and topped $1 million in purse earnings in each of his three full seasons since turning pro in 2016.

McCarthy and Torres were replaced on their remaining mounts, while Karamanos was not named on any horses after the sixth.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
