Maximum Security To Baffert: West Calls Servis News ‘Extremely Disturbing And Disappointing’

Maximum Security, recent winner of the $20-million Saudi Cup, will be transferred to the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Gary West, co-breeder and co-owner of the 2019 Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old male, announced the change early Tuesday morning in a statement following Monday’s federal indictment of 27 individuals, including trainer Jason Servis, who guided Maximum Security from a $16,000 maiden claiming contest to a victory in the world’s richest race, total earnings of $11,801,900 and a stallion deal with associates of Coolmore Stud, which now co-owns the New Year’s Day colt and plans to stand him at its Kentucky stallion station, Ashford Stud.

The 44-page grand jury indictment of Servis and others alleged Maximum Security was illegally drugged prior to a race at Monmouth Park last year with a performance-enhancing growth substance called SGF-1000, which the indictment says was obtained from a compounding pharmacy.

Following is the statement from West, emailed to the Paulick Report:

“Yesterday, Jason Servis, a trainer we have used for 5 years was indicted   on multiple charges regarding using an illegal substance in horses. This news is extremely disturbing and disappointing.  Therefore we will be moving all our horses from Jason Servis as soon as arrangements can be made with other trainers. Maximum Security will be sent to Bob Baffert.”

Baffert has trained two recent Eclipse Award winners for West and his wife, Mary: West Coast, outstanding 3-year-old male of 2017, and Game Winner, outstanding 2-year-old male of 2018. He also trained their Grade 1 winners Power Broker and Maximum Security’s sire, New Year’s Day, winner of the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

West initiated a lawsuit against the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, its members and stewards at Churchill Downs after Maximum Security was disqualified from first place for causing interference in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. West lost the first round in the suit but has appealed the decision.
