Marina’s Legacy Scores Repeat Victory In Indiana’s Florence Henderson Stakes

There was no stopping Marina’s Legacy in the 15th running of the $100,000-added Florence Henderson Stakes Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Indiana Grand. The four-year-old filly rallied out to the lead and never looked back, scoring the win in the Florence Henderson Stakes for the second straight year. Trained by Aaron West, Marina’s Legacy earned the third win of the year in her fourth start for 2018.

Despite post 11 in the 12-horse lineup over the turf, Marina’s Legacy and jockey Jesus Castanon had a game plan in mind from the start and pursued the top spot, getting a half length in front passing the grandstand for the first time to lead the field through the first turn. Once on the lead, Castanon kept the daughter of Divine Park relaxed and ready for the stretch.

Express Run and DeShawn Parker had the best spot to catch Marina’s Legacy on the outside, but the leader had more in store for the field. She lengthened her stride and moved out to a three and three-quarter length lead in the end for the win, her third straight trip to the winner’s circle. Miss Artie and Ty Kennedy rallied up late for second over Express Run for third. The time of the one and one-sixteenth mile stakes race was 1:45.05 over the yielding turf.

Marina’s Legacy, the favorite of the field, paid $6.60, $3.80, $2.80 across the board. The victory was her sixth career win in 15 starts for Bone Doctors Stable. The Indiana bred filly now has in excess of $330,000 in career earnings.

Prior to the start of the race, a strong storm blew across Indiana Grand with heavy rains and wind. The turf was downgraded to yielding, and put the handicappers to work with last minute changes to their picks.

“I was going to leave it in the hands of Jesus,” said trainer West on strategy for the race. “The horses he has ridden, he doesn’t need any direction. He did his job. She (Marina’s Legacy) did her job, and we got lucky. The outside draw didn’t really factor in. We were going to play the break and hope to get the lead. If we didn’t get the lead, we would go from there.”

Several members of the Bone Doctors were on hand to see their prized Marina’s Legacy win yet again. The Bone Doctors Stable, based out of Evansville, Ind., is made up of five doctors. In addition to Dr. Gilson, the stable includes Dr. James Gabel, a veterinarian, Dr. Steve Gabel, an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. J.P. Morgan, an orthopedic surgeon, and Dr. Mike Zenni, a urologist. The group also bred and raised Marina’s Legacy, although the dam, Marina, passed away when the filly was only a few months old.

“This is a special day, and a special horse,” said Melanie Gilson, Dr. Phil Gilson’s wife. “We could hardly see the track because of the rain, but it didn’t matter. Marina just goes out and does what she needs to.”

It was one of three wins on the card for Castanon. The top 10 jockey at Indiana Grand earned two wins earlier in the card.
