Maraud Runs Down Favorite For Palm Beach Score

Treadway Racing Stable’s Maraud was determined down the stretch, running down 8-5 favorite Speed Franco to win by a neck in Saturday’s Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes. The 3-year-old son of Blame covered 1 1/16 miles over Gulfstream’s firm turf in 1:41.01, earning his first graded stakes victory. Ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher, Maraud went sent off at odds of 7-2 in the Palm Beach.

“There was not too much speed in the race and after speaking with Todd, he said if it doesn’t look like there’s too much speed, let me use my horse for the first part,” Velazquez relayed. “On the lead he was really tough. He didn’t run as close to the lead, so when I asked him at the quarter pole, he ran away with me a little.”

Eye of A Jedi broke extremely poorly and was ten lengths back of the leader going under the wire the first time

Maraud broke well and, after pressing the frontrunning Speed Franco into the first turn, settled in to second down the backstretch. Velazquez tracked the favorite through fractions of :23.89 and :48.56, then send Maraud after the leader heading into the far turn.

Hawkish went three-wide to join Maraud in the turn, but both were still a length shy of Speed Franco at the head of the lane. Maraud steadily wore down Speed Franco’s advantage over the length of the stretch as that rival appeared to shorten stride late; Maraud crossed the wire about a neck in front. Speed Franco had to settle for second, while Therapist beat out Hawkish for fourth.

“[Speed Franco] ran down Gidu last time {in the Grade 3 Dania Beach}, and we think a lot of him, so it was a quality effort,” Pletcher said.

Bred in Kentucky by John and Frank Penn, Maraud was a $100,000 yearling at the Keeneland September sale. Pinhooked through the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old in training sale, he brought $375,000 from Treadway. Maraud broke his maiden on debut, then placed in the G3 Pilgrim Stakes in his second career start. The Palm Beach is his first graded victory, and improves his record to three wins from five starts for earnings of $160,000.
