‘Longshots Have Come Runnin’ In The Past’: Winning Impression Will Point To Kentucky Derby

The 3-year-old gelding Winning Impression has officially been declared for the Kentucky Derby, co-owner West Point Thoroughbreds reported on Twitter Monday afternoon. Most recently seventh in the Ellis Park Derby, the son of Paynter stands at 20th in the Derby points standings and has a guaranteed spot in the starting gate on Sept. 5.

According to the Tweet, Winning Impression will be ridden by Joe Rocco, Jr. in the 1 1/4-mile classic.

Trained by Dallas Stewart and co-owned by Pearl Racing, Winning Impression owns one win from nine starts and earnings of $98,552. His Derby points stem from a third-place finish in the G1 Arkansas Derby, and while the gelding hasn’t won a race as a sophomore, Stewart trainees have a reputation for hitting the board at big odds in the Run for the Roses.

In 2013, Golden Soul ran second in the Kentucky Derby at odds of 34.5 to one. In 2014, Commanding Curve ran second in the Kentucky Derby at odds of 37.8 to one. In addition, the Stewart-trained Tale of Verve ran second in the 2015 Preakness at odds of 28.5 to one, and Macho Again ran second in the 2008 Preakness at odds of 39.9 to one.
