Longer Vacation Should Lead To Top-Notch Season For The Pizza Man

Richard and Karen Papiese's 8-year-old Illinois-bred gelding The Pizza Man is on track to return to the spotlight in 2017, according to bloodhorse.com. Unraced since Nov. 24, The Pizza Man turned in his first major workout of the year at Churchill Downs' Trackside training center on Tuesday, breezing a half in :50 flat as trainer Roger Brueggemann looked on.

“Two years ago, when we gave him three months off, he came back just like this, where he really wanted to do something and wants to do more than he should, which is good,” Brueggemann said. “I really think he'll be better this year. He just floated today.”

Papiese said that The Pizza Man won't have a heavy racing schedule in 2017, building up to the Arlington Million and closing out the season with a run in the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. The son of English Channel will likely begin his campaign with an allowance race, and his owner doesn't believe it will take long for the gelding to get back in racing shape.
