‘Listened To Our Audience’: Will Rogers Downs’ Pick 5 Will Not Be Turned Into Jackpot Wager

The 50-cent Pick 5 wager at Will Rogers Downs will not be turned into a jackpot wager, racing secretary and track announcer John Lies confirmed on Twitter Tuesday evening. Lies acknowledged that horseplayers’ concerns on social media were taken into account when making the decision.

It’s official! The 50-cent Pick Five at WRD will NOT become a jackpot. United Tote recommended sticking with the original payout methodology for today, and WRD further listened to our audience. Pool pays out daily to tickets with most winners, no carryover. Confusion regretted.

The Pick 5 wager has only been in place at Will Rogers for four racing days. Horseplayers were not in favor of the track’s idea to turn the wager into a jackpot bet, in which the total pool would have been divided 50/50 to multiple ticket winners and to a carryover jackpot.

Still, Will Rogers’ later decision to backtrack the jackpot format earned overall positive responses on social media.

This is an unbelievably bad decision. How can horse racing get it so wrong the majority of the time. I guess we’re playing the Pick 4. What an absolutely punch in the throat to horseplayers https://t.co/mhqYN4GOp5

Can you ask John why they are going to a jackpot pick 5 with an effective daily takeout of over 60%? Shouldn’t they be taking advantage of the opportunity to increase their customer base rather than rip them off for a short term gain.

Only two hours later, Will Rogers reverses course and announce there won’t be a jackpot pick 5. I respect it. https://t.co/l7wxsxhljd
