‘Knowing When To Retire Your Racehorse’: Free Dr. Patricia Hogan Seminar On Aug. 18

Dr. Patty Hogan will present an educational seminar for horse owners and trainers entitled, “Knowing When To Retire Your Racehorse,” in Saratoga Springs on Friday, Aug. 18. The 90-minute event, hosted by New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, will be held at the Fasig-Tipton Pavilion, 415 East Ave., beginning at 11 a.m. Trainers and assistant trainers will earn 1.5 hours of CE credit for attending the seminar, which is free and open to the public.

“I want to provide some understanding of the medical challenges that are common to the Thoroughbred racehorse, how they can be managed, and then determining when those challenges are no longer conducive to a racing career,” Dr. Hogan said. “The goal is to retire the horses while second careers are still an option. The many avenues available to owners and trainers to transition horses on to other careers will be discussed.”

A native of New Jersey, Dr. Hogan earned her veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania, then interned at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital and served a three-year surgical residency at Texas A&M before opening her own practice, Hogan Equine at Fair Winds Farm, back in her home state. She was honored with the first NYTHA “EquiStar Award” for her dedication and outstanding work on behalf of New York’s retired racehorses.
