Knee Injury Temporarily Sidelines Jockey Jose Ortiz

Jockey Jose Ortiz will be off his mounts through this weekend after injuring his left knee in a spill at Belmont Park on Wednesday.

The Daily Racing Form reports that the “extent of the injury will not be known until Ortiz gets an MRI”, which would be either today or Friday, according to Ortiz’s agent, Jim Riccio Jr. X-rays taken on the knee did not show any fractures.

“He had a hard time putting weight on it when the doctor told him to,” Riccio told the Form. “It could be just soreness but we won’t know until we get the MRI. He’s not going to ride the rest of the week.”

Ortiz was injured when his mount, the 3-year-old filly Submit, broke down in Wednesday’s ninth race at Belmont Park. The Christophe Clement-trained filly suffered a fractured left front cannon bone and had to be euthanized.

According to the Form, Ortiz was named to ride six races at Belmont on Thursday and nine on Friday. On Saturday, he was named to ride Lockdown in the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes and Petrov in the Gallant Bob, both at Parx. Ortiz was also named to ride Overture in the Charles Town Oaks on Saturday night at Charles Town.
