King Guillermo Encounters ‘A Little Problem,’ Does Not Train Thursday

King Guillermo, 20-1 on the morning line for this year’s Kentucky Derby, has encountered an unspecified issue and did not go to the track Thursday morning as scheduled.

Trainer Juan Carlos Ávila declined to elaborate further to National Turfwriters and Broadcasters Association pool reporter Greg Hall, except to say there was “a little problem.”

“It’s a big race and a little problem is a bit problem for me,” Ávila said.

Ávila anticipated a consultation with medical professionals and indicated he would have more information Thursday afternoon.

King Guillermo, who is owned by Victorias Ranch, comes to the race the runner-up in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, and winner of the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby. Samy Camacho has been named as the rider for the son of Uncle Mo.

This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
