KHRC Defers Vote On New Harness Track License For 30 Days

Following presentations by the three groups seeking a license for a harness racing track in Oak Grove, Ky., the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission decided to take no action on the matter this week. According to harnessracing.com, the KHRC officially deferred the vote on which group to license for 30 days.

Following is a quick summary of each group’s proposal:

Churchill Downs, Inc., and Keeneland: The only plan without a barn area on-site, this proposal included a $150 million budget for 1,200-1,500 historical racing machines, a 125-room hotel and an equestrian center and amphitheater. A 12-day live race meet was proposed for October.

Caesars Entertainment: “Harrah’s Bluegrass” would have a budget of up to $140 million with 1,500 historical racing machines, and the future possibility of a hotel. Also includes a short race meet in October.

Kentucky Downs: “Oak Grove Meadows” would have a $45 million budget with 300 historical racing machines (due to close proximity to KY Downs), along with a 450-stall barn area and 125-room hotel. This proposal brought the most race dates, between 15-30 in October.
