Keeneland Presents American Graded Stakes Standings: More Thoughts On The Eclipse Awards

The Eclipse Award ceremony will be held at Gulfstream Park Thursday, Jan. 25. In last week’s column, we took a brief look at the finalists in both the 2- and 3-year-old divisions. This week we’ll look at the remaining equine categories.

Male Sprinter: Finalists are Imperial Hint, Mind Your Biscuits and Roy H. The favorite in this category is Roy H, who capped off a great season with a win in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. In addition, he won the G1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship and G2 True North, and was second in the G1 Bing Crosby.

Female Sprinter: Bar of Gold, Paulassilverlining, Unique Bella. This category is wide open. Although she won the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, Bar of Gold – who pulled a 66-1 upset in the Breeders’ Cup – won only one other start last year, so she likely is an outsider to win the Eclipse. Paulassilverlining finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup, but had a brilliant first half of the year, winning the G1 Madison, G1 Humana Distaff and G2 Honorable Miss, which gives the edge to her.

Male Turf: Beach Patrol, Talismanic, World Approval. Live Oak Plantation’s World Approval won five of six starts in 2017, capping off his year with a win in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile. Prior to that he won the G1 Woodbine Mile, G1 Fourstardave and G2 Dixie. Beach Patrol notched wins in the G1 Arlington Million and G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, and was second to Talismanic in the G1 BC Turf. As a result, World Approval gets the nod here.

Female Turf: Lady Eli, Off Limits, Wuheida. Lady Eli may have finished off the board in the G1 BC Filly & Mare Turf, but prior to that she won three of four starts, which included two G1 wins. The talented mare will take home her long-overdue Eclipse Award this time.

Older Male: Arrogate, Collected, Gun Runner. Through the first half of the year, it looked as though Arrogate was a lock to win the Eclipse, after posting wins in the G1 Pegasus World Cup and G1 Dubai World Cup. However, Gun Runner emerged as the dominant force the second half of the season, notching wins in the G1 Stephen Foster, G1 Whitney, G1 Woodward, and the G1 BC Classic. As a result, Gun Runner takes home the championship.

Older Female: Forever Unbridled, Songbird, Stellar Wind. Forever Unbridled may have only raced three times, but she was undefeated in those three starts, and she defeated both Songbird and Stellar Wind. The Dallas Stewart trainee captured the G2 Fleur de Lis, G1 Personal Ensign and G1 BC Distaff, and is the likely champion.
