Keen Ice, Bal A Bali Among New Additions To Calumet Farm Stallion Roster For 2018

Keen Ice, a son of leading sire Curlin, boasts an impressive race record – a G1 winner with earnings over $3.4 million. Possibly one of the most notable accomplishments of his career was defeating American Pharoah in the Grade 1 Travers, making him the only horse to cross the wire ahead of the reigning Triple Crown Champion during his historic 3YO campaign.

Jak Knelman, Director of Stallion Season Sales for Calumet Farm said, “Keen Ice has everything we look for in a stallion. He defeated the likes of American Pharaoh, Frosted, and Shaman Ghost. He is by Leading sire Curlin out of a deep female family, and he has an impressive physical, standing over 16.2 with the balance and strength that American breeders look for.”

Bal a Bali (BRZ), a son of Put It Back, is an intriguing stallion prospect as he won 11 of 12 races in Brazil en route to claiming the Brazilian Triple Crown and shattering two track records. His 1:31.36 for 1600 meters (about 1 mile) was just shy of a world record. He was shipped to the US at the start of his 4YO and placed in training under Richard Mandella where he most recently became a multiple Grade 1 Winner in the USA.

Knelman said, “Bal a Bali (BRZ) has as much heart as you could ask for from a stallion prospect. To be such a dominant 2yo and 3yo and then to overcome laminitis and return to be a multiple G1 winner in the USA really shows how much grit and determination he has as a racehorse.”

“We are going to support Bal a Bali (BRZ) heavily with Calumet’s broodmare band. As he won from 5 furlongs up to 12 furlongs, with his preferred distance at 1 mile, he has the ability to sire a speedy 2yo while giving his progeny every chance to win at the classic distance.”

“Hailing from the Relaunch and In Reality line we see his potential as a dual Dirt/Turf stallion from his race record and his handily bullet works of 46 and change and 58 flat that give credence to his dirt potential.”

Also new to the roster for 2018, a son of the internationally successful sire War Front and full brother to multiple Group 1 winner Declaration of War, War Correspondent is a multiple Graded Stakes winner and Grade 1 placed. He will join the Calumet roster after completing his 2017 racing campaign.

“War Correspondent is an exciting prospect with one of the most relevant sire producing female families in the book. Not only is he a full brother to Declaration of War, but he is also out of a half sister to leading sire Union Rags. Physically he is a very attractive War Front and that should be very appealing to commercial breeders.” said Knelman.

Mr. Z., a son of Malibu Moon, was campaigned for the latter half of his career in the black and gold chevron silks of Calumet and earned over $1 million. Knelman is excited to have a top son of perennial leading sire Malibu Moon to offer to breeders and states, “Mr. Z hails from the impressive Amelia Bearhart family. He was a gritty horse that showed up to every big dance on the track and we look forward to instilling that in his foals.”

“The new stallions we have coming to Calumet this season will nicely compliment our existing roster. We support all of our stallions in the breeding shed and at the track. Without this support it is impossible for the breeder to get full value for their investments,” said Eddie Kane, Calumet Farm General Manager.

Several other notable stallions on the Calumet Roster include ENGLISH CHANNEL, OXBOW, BIG BLUE KITTEN, RED ROCKS (IRE), SMARTY JONES, OPTIMIZER AND RAISON D’ETAT.

Six time Grade 1 winning, and Breeders’ Cup Turf Champion English Channel continues to experience great success as a sire with proven runners on both the Turf and Dirt. This year English Channel has had 16 individual horses produce 33 Blacktype performances. With a lifetime sire percentage of 14% Blacktype Horses / Starters, he is one of the best values at stud today.

“Our roster features a wide variety of bloodlines possessing soundness, quality conformation, and a propensity to winning classic two-turn races on both dirt and turf. We are focused not only on building long term relationships with breeders but also sharing in the commercial and racing success of our stallions. I am certain we will have something to fit the needs of almost any breeder.” said Knelman.
