Justify ‘Enjoying What He’s Doing’ In Seven-Furlong Tune-Up

Potentially the favorite for next Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, Bob Baffert trainee Justify seemed to embody those expectations on Friday morning at Santa Anita Park. The Scat Daddy colt breezed with a work mate, according to drf.com, in what will be his final major exercise before the biggest test of his young career.

Breaking off several lengths behind, Justify cruised up to join his workmate nearing the wire. Baffert timed him in splits of 12.40, 24.40, 36.60, 49.20, 1:00.80, and 1:12.60; clockers gave him an official seven-furlong time of 1:25.20.

Jockey Drayden Van Dyke asked the colt for a bit more on his gallop out, and he responded enthusiastically, rolling through a mile in 1:39.80 on Baffert’s watch.

“That’s what you want to see,” the veteran trainer said. “You want to see a horse that’s enjoying what he’s doing. He worked well, and got something out of it.”

Santa Anita Derby winner #Justify worked 7F in 1:25.20 this morning at @santaanitapark for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert in preparation for an expected start in the @KentuckyDerby.
