Juliet Foxtrot Posts Front-Running Victory In Arlington’s Modesty Handicap

Juddmonte Farms’ homebred Juliet Foxtrot remained undefeated in the United States while winning her first graded stakes, capturing Saturday’s Grade 3 Modesty Handicap by 1 3/4 lengths at Arlington Park on Million Preview Day at the suburban Chicago racetrack.

Ridden by Florent Geroux, Juliet Foxtrot went wire to wire, covering the 1 3/16 miles on firm turf in 1:54.00. Calumet Farm’s Vexatious finished second, with Cloros Bloodstock’s Simply Breathless another three-quarters of a length back in third and Al and Bill Ulwelling’s Remember Daisy fourth in the field of nine older fillies and mares.

Brad Cox trains the 4-year-old daughter of the Danehill stallion Dansili  out of Kilo Alpha, by King’s Best. She was bred in England, where she began her racing career, winning one of eight starts for Charles B. Hills  at ages 2 and 3. Juliet Foxtrot carried 115 pounds, four less than 119-pound high weight Simply Breathless.

Juliet Foxtrot paid $5.60.

The winner made her U.S. debut in April at Keeneland, winning an entry level allowance race on the turf, edging Malakeh at 7-1 odds while battling for the lead throughout. Six weeks later, Juliet Foxtrot roared from off the pace to win another turf allowance race, this one at Churchill Downs, drawing off by 4 1/2 lengths as the 8-5 favorite.

Juliet Foxtrot had no trouble getting the early lead, out hustling Simply Breathless from the gate, then set leisurely fractions of :23.91, :49.01, 1:13.23 and 1:36.79 en route to her victory.Vexatious, third early, finished well to get second but was never a threat to the winner.

The Modesty Handicap is a prep for the G1 Beverly D. Stakes on the Arlington Million card Aug. 10.
